Why High School Students Should Learn Computer Programming

Playing games on my old gaming systems and the new ones on my smart-phone has entertained me for a long period of time, but I soon ask myself, “How did they make this?” You see an amazing app on the App Store and tell yourself that this app had great marketing, user-experience, and a beautiful design, but how did it all come to be? The underlying factor that is always neglected by the user is the programming behind it.

TI-Nspire CX vs. TI-84 Plus

Please buy your TI-Nspire CX on Amazon . With a new school year upon us, I’m bound to get a flood of questions from students about which graphing calculator is right for them. Since the new color TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition is now on the market, I’m assuming the question of the TI-Nspire CX vs. the TI-84 Plus C will be one of the biggest questions I get this school year.

Chromecast for Teachers

UPDATE: My Chromecast Review for Teachers has now been posted.   Even in the midst of getting ready for the big book release today, something caught my eye yesterday that I couldn’t pass up doing a post about. If you missed it, the Google Chromecast was announced yesterday. The Chromecast is a device that should have existed a couple of years ago. It did, in fact. It was called the Apple TV, a device that let’s you beam content from your iPad, iPod, iPhone, or Mac to your television.

Advice for Buying a Used Graphing Calculator

For a great selection of used graphing calculators, click here to see Ebay’s full selection. While most end up buying a new calculator, some thrifty students (or their parents) end up buying a used graphing calculator. Much like buying a used car, the main advantage is depreciation. You can often buy a used graphing calculator for half of what a new one would cost. On the other hand, much like buying a used car, there are some risks.

Looking for a TI-83 plus cheap? I can’t recommend it. You will be SO MUCH HAPPIER with a TI-84 Plus by clicking this link to Ebay. OK, I’ve had enough. It’s time for a rant. I’ve been watching the top 20 graphing calculator rankings on Amazon for a while now. What’s that? You’ve never spent time following the “power rankings?” Let me tell you. You’ve been missing out. It’s not the story you might think you’ve been missing out on: The TI-84 Plus has had a stranglehold on the top spot for years as the various iterations of the TI-Nspire have slowly climbed the ladder trying to knock it off.

TI-84+C Asymptote Detection

Left–TI-84+C Asymptote detection turned off. Right–Asymptote detection turned on. This isn’t at all a post I was planning to do, but again tonight I had another question on the Tech Powered Math Facebook page about the TI-84+C and asymptotes. If you press 2nd and FORMAT, you’ll find an option called “Detect Asymptotes” that can be turned on or off. The people I’ve heard from seem to assume that this feature will find and define asymptotes for users, but from my experience I don’t believe it functions this way.

Recently I heard from a new company, Guerrilla Calculator Accessories, asking me to take a looking at their line of graphing calculator cases, protectors, covers and shields for Texas Instruments calculators. The guys at Guerrilla have thought of just about every possible way a student might want to accessorize and protect their Texas Instruments graphing calculator.
