Born Bad at Math? Beyond the Media Hype

The Huffington Post is just one of numerous media outlets reporting on a Johns Hopkins research study about number sense in pre-schoolers. Essentially, the study showed that even though the kids hadn’t learned much in the way of in the way of formal mathematics, it was possible to measure their number sense abilities already. Further, those with better number sense also scored highly on tests that would predict the kids’ future mathematics ability.

Brainetics Review

I have to admit this is one of the first reviews I’ve done based on the recommendation of a student. Last spring, one of my students came in completely psyched about a present her parents had given her, Brainetics. I’d never even heard of Brainetics, so she had to get me up to speed. It turns out that Brainetics is a DVD program designed to teach kids how to do complex math mentally.

Casio Prizm 'Guided Tours' Launched

If you haven’t seen it yet, Casio recently launched a Guided Tours site for the Casio Prizm. On this site, you’ll find about 10 videos guiding you through the basics of the Casio Prizm, including most of the icons that an average user will utilize. Kaplan’s free SAT and ACT question quizbank

UPDATE: Since this post, I’ve more posted a more recent review of Kaplan ACT & SAT Prep. When you’re prepping for the SAT or ACT, one of the best things you can do to improve your score is work on practice math problems. Kaplan is now providing a free tool for getting ACT or SAT practice problems online. Kaplan’s SAT Quizbank and ACT Quizbank allow students to get practice test problems with a lot of flexibility.

Facebook-Ally in math education?

The Hill is reporting that on Thursday math students and educators gained a new ally in the quest for better math education in America–Facebook.  On Thursday, the popular social networking site sent a letter to Congressional leaders asking for more funding for math, science, and technology education, expressing concerns that if action isn’t taken, America will fall behind its competitors in these key areas. Excerpts from the letter follow: The shortage of students entering STEM careers has long been recognized in Washington, Silicon Valley, and beyond.
