TI-84+ jailbreaks the PS3

The process of “jailbreaking” or “rooting” devices such as iPods, iPhones, Android phones, and PlayStations has become increasingly popular among the tech savvy because it allows users greater freedom to install apps and perform customizations normally available only to developers. The amount of time and the procedure the process requires can vary from hours sitting at a computer to seconds on a website. Now comes word that hackers have found a way to jailbreak the Sony’s PS3 using something very familiar to Tech Powered Math readers–a TI-84+ (silver edition not required).

Great math problem tweeters

If you’re looking for some great math practice problems, Twitter can be one place to turn. It’s also convenient since you’re probably logging in to tweet on a regular basis anyway. Here are some “Tweeters” to consider if you’re looking for some extra practice or a challenge. Description: TheNational Council of Teachers of Mathematics tweets primarily high school level problems. Questions go out in the morning, answers at night. Example Problem: How many different rectangles can be drawn using the hour marks on a clock’s face as vertices?

Interview with Open SciCal creator Matt Stack

Open SciCal Earlier this week, Matt Stack made headlines when he announced he had created an entirely open source software and hardware graphing graphing calculator. For those unfamiliar with the concept, “open source” means that the programmers who write the computer code make it public for anyone to tweak, improve, or customize. This differs greatly from commercial software efforts where code is a carefully guarded secret. The news of Matt’s creation, Open SciCal, was quickly picked up and reported on by Wired and Gizmodo among others.
