Texas Instruments Announces TI-Nspire CX II

UPDATE: I have posted my TI-Nspire CX II review. Eight years… That’s how long it’s been since Texas Instruments announced the TI-Nspire CX graphing calculator, their first color graphing calculator. Since then, the platform has gotten a wide variety of software updates for the the TI-Nspire CX and CX CAS models that have continued to keep it at the top of the list of the best graphing calculators on the market.

This Is the Reboot

For quite some time, I’ve planned to make significant changes to Tech Powered Math. Today is finally the day the new site launches. Some of those changes are readily apparent to long time visitors, as the site is getting a much needed visual refresh. Others, while less apparent, should provide a better user experience as I’ve migrated this site from WordPress to a lightweight static system, a system which I will continue to improve and tweak over time.

TI-84 Plus CE Golden Ratio and TI-84 Plus CE Bright White

As if the TI-84 Plus CE didn’t have enough cool, stylish colors to begin with, there will soon be two new attractive colors available in the 84 Plus CE family, the Golden Ratio and Bright White. The Golden Ratio, is a limited edition, shiny, metallic gold finish, and Bright White is the “sleek” white that its name implies. “For us, it’s about providing the educational tools and resources to help students build a strong foundation in math and science, setting them up for success in the classroom, college, and beyond,” said Peter Balyta, Ph.

TI-Nspire NASA Activity Fuel for the Fire Launches Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Texas Instruments will add to mISSion imaginaTIon, their partnership with NASA, when they launch a new activity called “Fuel for the Fire.” TI was nice enough to give me an early preview of the Fuel for the Fire, including student and teacher handouts and the .tns file for the Nspire that makes up the bulk of the activity. This is a really rich activity that will force students to think, and offers some interesting simulations.

TI-Nspire CX OS 4.2 Released

TI-Nspire CX OS 4.2 has been released on the Texas Instruments website. You can find the release notes on the TI website. There are a few cool new features in this release, including the ability to automatically generate sliders for certain parameters in graphs and notes, manage the settings of connected handhelds through TI-Navigator (this will be very useful for teachers that work with inexperienced Nspire students), and a few other selected upgrades.

Farewell to Zite

Tonight, I Shed a Tear for the Passing of My Most Used App Today, Flipboard followed through on its stated timeline and threw the kill switch on Zite. While not the most well-known of the news aggregators, Zite was certainly one of the most beloved by those who used it (see Garner, Jennifer). Sadly for its fans, Flipboard acquired Zite in the Spring of 2014. “The sooner Zite goes away, the better,” said Zite CEO Mark Johnson.

Hour of Code 2015

We are just a couple of weeks away from the 2015 Hour of Code. Last year, I did the Hour of Code with all of my students on my last day as a teacher after 13 years in the classroom, and they loved it. If you are a math, science, or computer teacher, or are a parent looking to give your child a start on a new set of skills, you owe it to yourself to check out the Hour of Code website.

Thoughts on “The Problem We All Live With”

As the the one year anniversary of Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO, This American Life has completed a very thought provoking two part series on the state of school desegregation both in the St. Louis area specifically and the United States as a whole. If you haven’t caught these segments yet, I’d strongly encourage you to take a listen. They are both highly entertaining and incredibly informative whether you are the parent of a child on one side of a racially divided school or just a citizen interested in better understanding the challenges our educators face today.
