Why High School Students Should Learn Computer Programming

Playing games on my old gaming systems and the new ones on my smart-phone has entertained me for a long period of time, but I soon ask myself, “How did they make this?” You see an amazing app on the App Store and tell yourself that this app had great marketing, user-experience, and a beautiful design, but how did it all come to be? The underlying factor that is always neglected by the user is the programming behind it.

TI-Nspire CX vs. TI-84 Plus

Please buy your TI-Nspire CX on Amazon . With a new school year upon us, I’m bound to get a flood of questions from students about which graphing calculator is right for them. Since the new color TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition is now on the market, I’m assuming the question of the TI-Nspire CX vs. the TI-84 Plus C will be one of the biggest questions I get this school year.

New Book: TI-84 Plus Tutorials

Click here to get TI-84 Plus Tutorials on Amazon. I’ve been hinting at it throughout July, but I’m thrilled to officially announce that my next book is finally here. This time, I’m taking a crack at Texas Instruments’ other ridiculously popular graphing calculator, the TI-84 Plus. The book is titled, TI-84 Plus Tutorials: The TI-84 Plus for Beginners. My latest book is now available on Amazon in Kindle format. If you are new to Kindle books, you should know that you do NOT need a Kindle device to read them.

TI-83 Plus Review

Looking for a TI-83 plus cheap? I can’t recommend it. You will be SO MUCH HAPPIER with a TI-84 Plus by clicking this link to Ebay. OK, I’ve had enough. It’s time for a rant. I’ve been watching the top 20 graphing calculator rankings on Amazon for a while now. What’s that? You’ve never spent time following the “power rankings?” Let me tell you. You’ve been missing out. It’s not the story you might think you’ve been missing out on: The TI-84 Plus has had a stranglehold on the top spot for years as the various iterations of the TI-Nspire have slowly climbed the ladder trying to knock it off.

TI-84+C Asymptote Detection

Left–TI-84+C Asymptote detection turned off. Right–Asymptote detection turned on. This isn’t at all a post I was planning to do, but again tonight I had another question on the Tech Powered Math Facebook page about the TI-84+C and asymptotes. If you press 2nd and FORMAT, you’ll find an option called “Detect Asymptotes” that can be turned on or off. The people I’ve heard from seem to assume that this feature will find and define asymptotes for users, but from my experience I don’t believe it functions this way.

Video: Upgrade to TI-84+ OS 2.55

In February, OS 2.53 was released by Texas Instruments for the TI-84+. This is unquestionably the best set of upgrades ever issued for the calculator. If you’re a longtime 84 plus user, you’ll feel like you’ve been given a new calculator for free. This video illustrates the improvements and guides you through the upgrade. More recently, a less major update, OS 2.55 was issued, but everything in this video still applies.

TI-84 Plus C Debuts on Amazon

Click here to buy the TI-84 Plus C on Amazon. The all new TI-84 Plus C color calculator (review) has debuted on Amazon. Apparently, it’s been there for a while, since it’s already gathered quite a few customer reviews. Not only is the TI-Nspire CX there but also the TI-Nspire CX CAS. At the value these newer calculators provide, I’d find it hard to go with the older TI-84 feature set over a CX model, but I know there are some of you that are fiercely devoted to the TI-84 platform.

TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition Review

Click here to buy the TI-84 Plus C on Amazon! UPDATE: (2/10/16) Since I wrote this review a couple of years ago, Texas Instruments has discontinued the TI-84 Plus C. While it continues to be available at some retail outlets like Amazon, I suggest taking a look at the newer model, the TI-84 Plus CE. You can follow this link to my TI-84 Plus CE Review. With so much of the attention from Texas Instruments on the TI-Nspire line over the last 5 years or so, it was exciting news to learn that the TI-84+ family of calculators was getting a much needed face lift with addition of color.

T3 Stream of Consciousness

In honor of one of my favorite sports bloggers, Robert of alioneye.com, I’m doing a “stream of conciousness” post to wrap up my thoughts on last weekend’s T3 conference. There’s no method or plan to this. I’ve just had a lot of random thoughts about my time in Philadelphia, none of which would make a satisfying post in and of itself. Here goes nothing. –As tough as Philadelphia sports fans can be, I was expecting the locals in Philly to be a little rough around the edges.

T3 Day 2 Roundup: Mayim, the Marriott, and the Market

My day two here in Philadelphia was jam packed with sessions, so much so that it feels really good to just hunker down in my room long enough to get a post up. The day kicked off with a session from the always entertaining TI-Nspire expert Tom Reardon. TI spokesperson and Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik was active throughout the conference today, and she made a “surprise” appearance at this session to present with Reardon.
