Texas Instruments Releasing New Robotic Rover

I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t found a chance to comment on Texas Instruments’ very interesting announcement last month that they are release a robotic vehicle, the TI-Innovator Rover. The TI-Innovator Rover is designed to work with either with any TI-Nspire CX model or the TI-84 Plus CE. Check out the video below for a high level demonstration of the Rover in action. In addition to your graphing calculator, you’ll also need a TI-Innovator Hub.

I took the new TI-Connect for a spin tonight, and it is a big improvement over the old version. It’s faster, the UI is much easier to work with, and one could easily program from within it. However, I ran into a speed bump when I got started. My Windows 7 machine wouldn’t recognize my TI-84 Plus CE. I’m not sure if this a fluke, specific to my PC, something to do with the new Connect, or if there is some other explanation.

UPDATE (5/7/2015): Texas Instruments has released the new version of their TI-84 Plus CE operating system, version 5.0.1.0012. It can be downloaded from education.ti.com. You’ll also need the new version of TI-Connect. If you run into any problems on the upgrade, TI customer support can help you out at 1-800-TI-CARES. With a platform that’s been around as long as the TI-84, which is in and of itself the evolution of the TI-83 (launched in 1996), we’re bound to see models come and go.
